Graphite and Watercolor Animal Portraits |
Artist Pamela Stockard has drawn commissioned works
for thoroughbred trainers Niall O’Callaghan, Michael Stidham, Cecilia
“Cil” Knight and others. Her graphite drawings are appreciated
for how they showcase the emotion and individual detail that owners see
in their beloved animals.
“ I really cherish the piece” - Cecilia Knight, trainer Pamela has been drawing most of her life and making pencil drawings of horses may have started as a childhood hobby but it’s become much more. Her love affair with thoroughbreds began when she was 11 and she watched Seattle Slew win the Kentucky Derby on television. Since that time she has tried to be around horses as much as possible and this is reflected in the quality of her art. Perhaps the reason she can so accurately depict a horse’s spirit and character with a pencil and eraser is because she’s intimately involved with the animals on a daily basis. “I love being able to feel their muscles when I’m drawing them because I feel them every morning when I’m riding. They’re so magnificent and powerful. And that’s what I feel when I draw them.”
Pamela starts with a favorite photograph of the subject taken in direct sunlight – the inspiration for the amazing contrast of light and dark that her final works convey. The photograph should be at least a 4”x 6” and the finished product can be up to 18” x 24”. While her specialty has always been horses, horse races and their owners, trainers and jockeys, Pamela can also use her talent to create a fantastic portrait of your dog or cat. These one-of-a-kind portraits can be drawn in either graphite or watercolors.
